Tooth filling

Currently, modern dental fillings completely match teeth not only in colour and hardness, but also with regard to their durability and lifespan. They are needed when the tooth enamel is damaged (usually due to tooth decay), or if the tooth becomes cracked or worn-down.

What is tooth decay (caries)?

Caries is a chronic process, which, at the beginning, may be reversed, but over time it leads to destruction (damage) extending from the tooth surface toward the dental pulp. At the beginning, it involves the crown enamel only, later it extends to the dentine, and with ageing it may involve the root surface (tooth neck dentine) and surfaces covered by dental root cement, extending over time even to the dental pulp.

What are the signs of tooth decay?

Since tooth decay alone is not accompanied by any pain, often it may be overlooked. However, it may be suspected, if the teeth suddenly become sensitive or if food gets often stuck between the teeth.

What happens if tooth decay remains untreated?

The decayed area may extend even to the dental nerve, then the tooth becomes inflamed and the patient experiences severe pain or the tooth becomes sensitive to cold or warmth. Sensitivity to cold indicates inflammation of the dental pulp, while sensitivity to warm stimuli will suggest that the tooth is dead.

Painless tooth filling: what you should know about it

During tooth filling, by placing a so-called composite into the damaged tooth, its integrity is restored. Tooth filling is usually needed due to dental decay or after some kind of trauma. If the deficit is too large, tooth structure cannot be restored by tooth filling; in such cases, an inlay or a crown is needed instead of a simple tooth filling.

How is a painless tooth filling done?

For a painless tooth filling, first the extent of tooth decay is established, then the anaesthetic, responsible for painlessness of tooth filling is injected.

After a couple of minutes, the cleaning preceding tooth filling is started and the cavity is prepared for filling.
The pre-made dental filling material is placed into the cleaned area and then it is cured by a special light.

After proper curing of the filling material, tooth surface is finished and then polished. Thus, the tooth will properly fit, in spite of the filling and your bite remains ideal.

Root canal treatment during decayed tooth restoration

Root canal treatment is the most efficient tooth preserving intervention. It can be used for inflamed, dead, injured or heavily decayed teeth. Symptoms of the above may include face swelling, throbbing pain or sensitivity on biting. Through this intervention, healing can be ensured without removal of the tooth. After treatment, complaints will cease, and the patients can keep their own natural teeth. During the treatment, root canal is cleansed of bacteria accumulated in it.

How is a root canal treatment done?

This procedure requires extreme attention and precision, but it is pain free, just like tooth filling. As a first step, an X-ray image is acquired about the area of interest. In this image, the shape of the dental pulp can be seen, and also it turns out whether bone is also involved in inflammation. Afterwards, the patient is given the anaesthetic, then dental tampons are put in the area and a drill is used to create a hole in the tooth to access the inflamed internal part. Next, damaged dental pulp and nerve tissue are removed. Then, root filling containing rubber is placed in the cleansed and dried area to prevent development of further inflammations. Finally, tooth crown is restored with a composite filling or an artificial crown.

During the days after intervention, sensitivity may be present. In such cases the use of over-the-counter painkillers will suffice.
Just like for other dental therapies, during root canal treatment we also use state-of-the-art tools; thus, successful intervention is guaranteed.
