Various periodontal diseases may remain asymptomatic for a long time; that is why it is extremely important to be aware of how periodontal diseases can be prevented and to watch out for every little symptom. If the disease remains untreated, later it may even lead to tooth loss. However, when treated, harmful processes can not only be stopped, but even reversed.

Where the so-called periodontium is located?

The periodontium is the supporting structure of a tooth composed of the gum and the bone surrounding the tooth.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease (or gingivitis) is basically the inflammation of the gum surrounding the tooth. In an advanced stage it leads to bone destruction.

How does periodontal disease develop?

The main causes of the disease are bacteria. Initially, pockets form under the gum, which will then become deeper and deeper. Because of the plaques and tartars, inflammation gets deeper and deeper, which may ultimately lead to bone destruction. After a certain depth, teeth cannot be cleansed properly, which results in tooth loss.

What are the first signs of periodontal disease?

  • An extremely sensitive gum (even to touch, in an advanced stage)
  • Bleeding gum
  • Receding gum
  • Pus filled pockets under the gum
  • Red and swollen gum
  • Gum detached from the tooth neck
  • Constant bad breath
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Tooth loosening or shifting
